Welcome to Intro to Descriptive Statistics

Descriptive statistics provide wonderful insights into the world of application-specific mathematics. Let's take a step back and look at why we call it descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics, like the name implies, describes data. As it is a focus on data, it does not involve probability. Probability is another area of statistics that is more commonly known. By focusing on the descriptive part it leads to a better understanding and viewing of the data. Moreover, it is useful to us as it would be extremely challenging to extract knowledge and information from data by viewing the raw data alone. You will learn the basics of descriptive statistics in our workshop and come out with a better understanding of the material.

Resource Objective

This online workshop aims to help you gain an understanding of the basics of descriptive statistics. By going through our modules and the resources we provide you should be able to get a coherent grasp of the material. We have our learners do the work in four modules in order to help you go through it at your own pace. We encourage the resource to be used in a way that uses cognitive and constructivist teaching methodologies. To see more on this, head over to the Learning Theory & Design page. The resource aim is to not only educate our learners on the intricacies of descriptive statistics, but also to serve as a stepping-off point for further education into the world of statistics and implementation-based mathematics.

Our Strategy at a Glance

To help our learners with our objectives and learning outcomes, we are using digital tools. By using and implementing tools like Notion and pre-existing quizzes on platforms that learners are familiar with, we help bring familiarity into the workshop session. Moreover, we designed the workshop in such a way that the teacher or facilitator can modify this resource in any way that they wish in order to meet the needs of their learner(s). Through the separation of our learning portion of the resource into four separate modules, we believe that our learners will be able to easily pick up and put down the units at their own pace. Lastly, we have used Notion: by designing the workshop in Notion, we can let the students interact and navigate in an environment that is easily editable without much technical literacy. This can bridge the shortfalls of inapplicability to certain learner demographics. For the listed reasons, we believe that our approach will help learners and facilitators come out with a successful and pleasant experience.
